Is that whip
worth it?
Owner complaints, recalls and crash ratings for any used car, and a verdict on the year.
Have the VIN? Find the car by it.
Read by NHTSA’s free VIN decoder. We do not keep it.
How it works
From the plate to the verdict.
Owner reports to NHTSA, not checked and not adjusted for sales. That is why we only compare a year with its own model, at the same age.
The verdict rules
- Worthy
- At least 5 complaints, and under 1.5 times a typical year (1.2 if most are costly parts).
- Maybe
- At least 1.5 times the complaints of a typical year, with at least 15 complaints. Or at least 1.2 times typical, with at least 25 complaints and 50 percent or more of them about costly parts such as the engine. Too many to be chance either way.
- Pass
- At least 2.5 times the owner complaints of a typical year, with at least 25 complaints, too many to be chance.
Not judged: too new (the newest 2 model years), too few complaints (under 5), or too few to tell a real problem from chance. Read the verdict rules

Don’t drive off upside down
Owing more than the car is worth. A long loan or a small down payment can put you there on day one; the payment calculator shows when, before you sign.
