The out the door price

Dealers quote a price, then add fees. Type every line from each quote to see what you really pay, and which dealer is lowest once it is all in.

Your quotes

Copy each line from the dealer's quote. Leave a box empty when the quote does not have it.

Dealer fees and add ons

Also called a documentation or processing fee. The dealer sets it, and some states cap it.

Tax and state fees

Your state and county rate.

An estimate is fine.

Optional. If the quote prints the tax, type it here and we use it instead of the rate.

Know the lines on a quote

Set by your state

Sales tax, title and registration

Set by your state and county. The dealer collects them, so they are not up for talks. They should match what your state charges.

Dealer sets it

Doc fee

The dealer’s paperwork fee. Some states cap it; many do not. If the dealer will not lower it, you can ask for the same amount off the price.

The big one

Ask for the out the door price

Ask each dealer for one total in writing, with every line listed. A low price can hide high fees, and a low payment can hide a long loan.

Often negotiable

Add ons and extra charges

These are common, and you can ask for them off or for the price to come down by as much. When an add on is already on the car, it is still fair to ask.

  • VIN etchingThe VIN etched on the windows. Kits to do it yourself cost little.
  • Nitrogen tiresTires filled with nitrogen. Plain air is mostly nitrogen already.
  • Paint protectionA sealant or coating on the paint. You can say no, or buy it later.
  • Fabric protectionA stain guard on the seats and carpet. You can say no.
  • Market adjustmentA markup over the sticker price. It is part of the price, so it can be talked down.
  • Dealer prepGetting the car ready to hand over. On a new car this is often in the sticker price already, so ask what it covers.

Next: see the monthly payment in the payment calculator, or check a loan offer with the dealer offer X ray.

Every figure here is worked out from what you type. Tax rules, doc fee caps and fees vary by state, so check each line with the dealer. Education, not financial or mechanical advice. Have any used car checked by a mechanic you trust before you buy.
